fitness update stairs
Here is last weeks fitness update: Maurice bought a book last week called “Secret Stairs: “A Walking Guide to the Historic Staircases of Los Angeles” During the early part of the last century Los Angeles built stairs all over the hilly sides of LA. These were put in place to give people easy access to the street cars which ran throughout the city. One neighborhood has 60 of these staircases.

The book separates the routes by community and gives directions to all the stairs. Last weekend we chose a route and walked it. Maurice picked out a 2.5 mile route and I told him that was ridiculously short and suggested we take the 6 mile route. Fortunately he won out because that was the most grueling 2.5 miles I’ve ever walked. One of the staircases was 133 steps. The entire route had a total of over 700 steps. It was a beautiful walk, however, so I’d highly recommend checking them out.

Despite the excellent start of the week, the rest of the week didn’t go as well. There were 2 days that I’d hoped to get down to the beach to walk along the strand, but that didn’t happen. I was pretty much a slug instead.

As for eating, that didn’t go so well either. I gained a bit, but it helps that I gained less this week than I lost last week. Here’s my fitness update.

Original Maximum Weight: 303 lbs

Goal Weight: 160 lbs

This loss/gain this week: + 1.6 lbs

Total loss so far 43.8 lbs

Current weight: 259.6 lbs

We agreed we aren’t going to attempt the stairs every weekend. We are going back to walking along the strand, which turned out to be a great way for us to lose weight a few years back. Oh, we’ll definitely do the stairs, but not every weekend. That would be just cruel..

  1. You go, Bradley! Attacking those stairs would have been some mighty hard work for me! When you’re thinking that you can’t motivate yourself to go walk on the beach, think of all of us poor landlocked things that don’t even have that choice. 😛

  2. Walking on historic staircases sounds like an adventurous way to get some exercise. I don’t believe we have any staircases like that where I live, so I’m a little jealous! I suppose I’ll just have to stick with walking around the neighborhood.

    1. Welcome Joshua,
Yes, I feel very fortunate to have discovered these stairs. Most people don’t know they exist even though they are all over the city. Sticking with walking is not so bad. Pat yourself on the back for at least walking.

  3. Sounds fun and challenging! Good on you and Maurice for accomplishing this feat!
