Pet Peeves

pet peeves

It seems like every blogger eventually does a pet peeves post and this time it’s my turn. Originally I had planned to do pet peeves only regarding mental health, but I couldn’t really think of many other than the ones we hear over and over again and there just weren’t that many. So, here’s my list starting with a few mental health pet peeves and then moving on to pet peeves in general.

  • People who try and convince you to go off your meds, perhaps to use holistic methods.
  • People on meds who suggest which ones you should or shouldn’t take because it worked or didn’t work for them.
  • Psychiatrists who begin a session by telling you all their problems.
  • When you are angry or upset and you’re asked if you took your meds.
  • “You just need to decide you’re going to have a good day.”
  • “I was depressed once and I just shook it off.”
  • “How come no one had bipolar when I was younger?”
  • Drivers who share their music with the rest of the world.
  • People who have dogs and think everyone should love dogs.
  • Napkin or towel dispensers that are stuffed so full that you try to get one you and end up pulling out about fifty.
  • People who throw their cigarettes on the ground.
  • “Watch, watch…here comes a good part.”
  • Barking dogs.
  • People in a coffee house who sit at a table with an electrical outlet, but aren’t using it.
  • Grammar police.
  • Use cell phone while driving.
  • Texting during a movie, or using a cell phone at all.
  • People who go outside to smoke but are only two feet from the door.
  • People who survive a horrible incident where many are killed and give God credit for saving them.  (Apparently he didn’t care about the rest of the people on the plane.)
  • People who don’t say “Thank you” for holding a door open for them.
  • People who believe you have to yell into their cell phone no matter where they are.
  • Conspiracy theories.
  • People pulling out of a driveway before stopping before the sidewalk first.People who insist on talking about a movie you haven’t seen yet.
  • People who seem to believe a shopping cart is for their own personal use to get their shopping goods home.

Those are all of mine, or at least the ones that come to mind.  What are your pet peeves?

  1. “When you are angry or upset and you’re asked if you took your meds.”

THIS. Seriously. Since I’m on meds I am supposed to be happy all the time, and never have any other human emotions? Go to hell. That’s not how it works. If it did, why isn’t everyone on them, so we can have frigging world peace finally? Grow up.

    1. To me it’s bullying. Taking advantage of my disability and using it against me. I’ve had it done to me and it’s hurtful.

  2. The whole holistic ‘movement’ in regards to mental illness makes me want to bite someone. Also, another pet peeve is people who say things like “Everybody’s crazy, some of us just deal with it better.” or who go on about how ‘cray cray’ they believe themselves to be, ESPECIALLY if they know about my diagnosis. I honestly think they’re trying to commiserate with me or I’d just throttle them on the spot.

  3. I have so many pet peeves that maybe my next book proposal will pitch a book entirely about pet peeves.Bradley, I’ll give you credit for giving me the idea, and you could write the forward! 😉

  4. this one: “How come no one had bipolar when I was younger?” or comments on how bipolar doesn’t seem to affect people in other parts of the world.

  5. People in church who say anyone with a mental disorder must be oppressed by the devil.
People who say that depression is a result of someone focusing inward on their problems.
I’ve had these statements said to me. I was too shocked at the time to know what to say.

  6. I think my husband asked me about whether I was taking my meds when I got upset over something twice before he learned not to do it again.

One of my pet peeves is hearing people talk about how ADHD didn’t exist before because people used belts. Even before my son was diagnosed, this always seriously pissed me off.

    1. Rightfully so. You have every right to be pissed. Unfortunately there’s a lot of ignorance and the belief mental illnesses were all caused by the drug companies.

  7. ….apparently, my computer won’t load the like button either so I’m having trouble “liking” your posts. The peeve about the paper towels just happened to be one of my problems this morning. Hmmmm…..I may have to do a post about my own pet peeves. My biggest pet peeve, though, is people who stand in the middle of the grocery aisle with their cart, acting as if the aisle were made for them and nobody can pass without the secret password. Excuse me doesn’t seem to register with some.

    1. Sorry you’re having so much difficulty and thank you for working around the problems. How in the hell did I forgot the shopping cart people? They drive me crazy!

  8. I have two pet peeves. The first, the biggest one, is my landlord. Just the mere fact that he breathes. The fact that he comes in and out of my property when I’m not home ( against the law ) and doesn’t even try to be discreet about it. The fact that he doesn’t fix anything, and yes, EVERYTHING is broken. And then there are the folk you insist on reversing into a parking in a packed shopping mall. They take so long; backwards, forwards, backwards, forwards. If you’re gonna park in a parking you will reverse. Either way. And my money’s on the easiest way which is to reverse OUT of a parking. So just parking your damn car and let me be on my way

    1. I’m with you on the landlord thing. Same problems. It’s the first time I’ve ever felt like I have a slumlord rather than a landlord. To me it’s the price of choosing to live in Los Angeles where our housing prices are ridiculous.
