On The Beach

I probably should have chosen a better title for this post than “On the Beach.” because there is an excellent 1959 movie by that name, starring Gregory Peck. It’s about the residents of Australia who must come to terms with the fact that all life will be destroyed in a matter of months due to radiation from a global nuclear war.

I decided to stick with the name because it best describes my favorite place to go in the mornings, which I’ve finally started to go more often. So shake your head and forget about the movie I just described and enjoy some pics I took from last weeks outings:

.Hermosa Beach
Of all the beaches in the Los Angeles South Bay, Hermosa Beach is my favorite. The people are all extremely friendly and while most of the homes are elegant, they’re not monstrous mansions or tall apartment buildings that you’ll find at nearby beaches.

Lifeguard station
6:45 a.m. I love the serenity that time of day.

Bradleys foot
I usually walk the paved strand that runs along the beach, but this week I’ve been walking along the surf and it’s a much better experience.

the beach and surf
Love the morning surf.

Bradley by pier
That’s me next to the pier

surfers
Not as many surfers out that day as there usually are.

Surfers memorial
This is a memorial dedicated to a legendary surfer. I’m sorry I can’t remember his name.

seaweed
Fortunately most of the beach isn’t this cluttered with seaweed, but there has been more this year than normal.

Malibu
Looking towards Pacific Palisades and Malibu.

weather report
What’s the weather today?

Hermosa
The town of Hermosa Beach. Taken from the end of the pier.

Good Stuff
My favorite restaurant. Great for people watching.

I hope you’ve enjoyed your tour. I love talking about the beach almost as much as I love being there.

      1. I don’t either but yes, I am! I loved growing up there in the 70’s before the area got hideously McMansioned. 🙁 At least they didn’t spoil the Santa Monica Mountains, & the beach, right? Thank God.

  1. For you surfing enthusiast, I am told the statue is of Tim Kelly. I was also told that the movie “On the Beach,” was originally a book that is considered a classic. I’ll have to get it.

  2. I lived in Hermosa in the late ’70s. The town has changed so much it’s hardly recognizable as the hippie/beach bum enclave that it was for decades. The beach is still the same-big, beautiful and beckoning. Nice pics btw.

    1. Hermosa is definitely not a hippie enclave anymore. Wish I had seen it back then. I do need to correct one thing I said. There are some monstrous mansions along the strand in Hermosa, but not nearly to the extent as some of the other beaches, such as Manhattan Beach.

  3. Bradley, thanks so much for sharing these wonderful photos. I love the morning surf, too! Wish I could live near water!

    1. I’m not a California native, but I do call it home. Before I got on meds, the beach was one of the few places that I could feel at peace.

      1. I sure understand that. As a youngster I lived in Montana–lots of mountains and rivers. Now mountains and water are my go-to places to get that peace you’re talking about.

  4. I have such a problem navigating to your blog. I follow you on facebook and when I click on your link, FB wants me to log in all over again. So….I’ve signed up with my email address. Anyway…….that time of morning looks like the best time to visit the beach. It’s so beautiful. I always remember staring out at the vast ocean and thinking how small my world and problems were. Now I’m a bit landlocked (well, it’s a 5 hour drive to the beach, and I’d rather go to the mountains). Well, now I’m rambling. Thank you for taking us on your walk to the beach!

    1. I’m glad you enjoyed the tour, April. I haven’t heard about the Facebook problem. I’ll look into it. In the meantime, thanks for signing up for the email alert. You can also follow me on the WordPress reader.

      1. That’s the problem….you aren’t showing up on my reader either. I’m going to go back and see if I missed something.

        1. Did you load my blog manually in your reader? I self host, so you have to do it manually. No simple follow button. I hope there’s not more people having these problems.

          1. Well, I will have to see…I’m not familiar with manual posting to my reader. I’m going to have to do some research.

  5. My friend had a place in Newport steps away from the beach (I mean like literally 20 steps) and walking distance to the bars during the off season one year. It was seriously one of the best times in my life. It holds dear, fond memories.

    1. I have no idea why my name didn’t come up. I haven’t quite figured out how to use the iPhone app. It’s Tommy from My Bipolar Life the Blog.

      1. I haven’t spent much time in Newport Beach. I hear the beaches in Orange County are different than up here, but not sure what those are. Looks like I’ll have to do a day trip.
