Stuck at 282

Plateau’s while dieting are a bitch. Even more of a bitch is when you keep stuck at a certain weight and it’s because you’re not balancing your diet and exercise. (sigh) And that is….dare I admit it….oh no…..that is what I’m failing to do. My first goal in my weight loss is to lose 24 pounds. My mini goal from that is to reach 50% of that which would be 12 pounds. 281 is that magic mark. That evil, unreachable, despicable mark.

My maximum weight was 293 lbs. (btw, why is the abbreviation for pounds “lb”?) Anyway, medical recommendations for my weight are in the neighborhood of 150 lbs. That means a total of 143 lbs to lose! That’s more than my little ‘ol brain can comprehend. So I’ve broken my goals down to 24 lb increments.

All of this is well and good, but I just haven’t been able to reach that first goal and I’ve been struggling for months. STRUGGLING. Sure, I had my Ben and Jerry’s phase and then the period where I was only allowed to eat meat, but my expectation is that I would be much farther than I am now.

I practice Buddhism. I’m also an alcoholic who got sober through A.A. Both teach you one vital thing….have no expectations. You can hope, and desire and strive for but have no expectations of the outcome. So what’s my problem? Expectations. I guess it’s probably not a good idea to ignore the teachings of those you respect.

Sure, some of you will tell me I shouldn’t be weighing myself, but that’s just not my nature. Years ago when I was running 5 miles a day I measured everything. My pace, my weight, my time, etc. etc. It was a period where I was most successful and it works for me.

Others will want to tell me that I should be happy with the weight I’ve lost and that I haven’t gained it back. You’re right and I am. But come on!!! We’re only talking one pound here!

The good news is our refrigerator is working better which means being able to stock a little on food rather than having to buy it everyday, which makes it very easy to grab foods that are quick and easy. Has anyone else noticed that quick and easy foods that taste good are bad for you? I’ll let you in on a little secret…they are.

So, that’s where I stand. Losing that one pound so I can mark the chart on the right to a 50% loss of my 24 pounds. Keep watching this week. I’ve promised myself that I will do it by the end of the week. Keep your fingers crossed.

  1. Thank you, My Lady. I was wanting to scream and I’m glad you did it for me. Hell, I’ll scream too…AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHH!

  2. Bradley,I know how frustrating it can be to be just one pound from where you want to be. It used to drive me crazy. As someone who lost more weight than I would ever want you to know (we’re talking 3 digits here), I feel your pain. I tried to stay off the scale but I never had that discipline so I drove myself crazy weighing myself but I did lose it all finally but it was the hardest thing I ever did.I really admire you and I can imagine how frustrating it is for you. Keep us posted!

  3. I loved this post Bradley.I was screaming for you. Just one pound – oh come on! It isn’t fair. All you want is a little happiness. A little recognition. A little sense of being proud of the achievement. Instead you have been cheated out of happiness.A little angry I know but sometimes it helps to yell!

  4. Keeping my fingers cross for you. I believe you can do it! Losing weight is a challenging process. One will reach a point where it seems the weight just stay constant and can no longer go lower. This is the time when endurance really comes in. Go pass this and you’ll reach another level. Go for it! We are all behind you … literally. 🙂

  5. *crosses all digits and knocks on her brain for you*And since you asked – The term lb. comes from the Latin word Libra (meaning scales).

  6. @bk Thank you for the support. This really is a great community.@stephany It’s just against my nature. I realize that weight can fluctuate, hell it does now, but unfortunately it doesn’t fluctuate down past 282. ARGH@CK Now the lb makes perfect sense. You’d think I’d know that since I’m a Libra.

  7. I know the frustration Bradley that’s for sure. I threw my scale out and use the doctor’s, and became obsessive about weighing once a month, same time, etc. I’ve been stuck where I’m at since February! the nurses all keep telling me the dreaded “stuck on a plateau” comment. Anyway, good luck.

  8. @Stephany Threw the scale out? Uh…uh…I don’t think I can. :-)@Leah I found a great way to curb my chocolate cravings – Altoids Dark Chocolate Dipped Mints. They have only 15 calories for two of them. I put a couple in my mouth and the craving is gone.

  9. I found your blog through clinically clueless, and thoroughly enjoyed the first post I read. I can relate!!Good luck on losing that last lb. on the way to your mini goal. 🙂 And YES – quick foods DO taste much better to me. And they are so easy – right? :-/

  10. Oh, S**T…just give the man a break it is only one pound!!! I’m feeling for you and understand. I’m also cheering for you and cussing, I guess…she what you do to me!!!! 🙂

  11. Good luck! You’ll get there if you keep trying 🙂 For me, exercise is key, and not keeping too much chocolate or cheese lying around…

  12. lb. stands for libra or librae a unit of weight in ancient Rome according to my computer.
